Cool stuff made by my friends, #2: Vacuum Tree Head, Thirteen
Last year, I sang some vocals on an album by a band called Vacuum Tree Head, aka Jason Berry and a loose collective of musicians based in San Francisco and New York. They have been making music for some time, and their latest album is the first time I have sung with them. The album has recently been released and is called Thirteen. It's brilliant and intense, a tightly packed twenty minutes of joyful artrock mayhem. This video features the vocals of the other singer on the record, Sylvia Gordon:

You can hear a selection of their stuff on their myspace, but right now the only place online you can hear the songs I sang on is CD Baby, where they are snippetised. I sang in strange tongues on "Djinn 2", "Neck Talkers", "Backlit Epiphany" and "Nights of Horseback Salad".

You're not going to like this
more than 2000 miles from the nearest continent. The nesting babies are fed bellies-full of plastic by their parents, who soar out over the vast polluted ocean collecting what looks to them like food to bring back to their young. On this diet of human trash, every year tens of thousands of albatross chicks die on Midway from starvation, toxicity, and choking.Look at these pictures. Found here, original post here.

Wombat Recording Company
Jesus this place has become a bit of a youtube zone of late. I'm going to spend the next while posting links to work by friends of mine, stuff I find inspiring, fun, interesting, good. Let's start with Wombat Recording Company.
This is the home of Ross Bonadonna, owner and operator of Wombat, which is a recording studio and creative production studio in Brooklyn, New York. I've been making my record there with Ross, who has also produced the entire thing. You will be hearing what we've done there over the past year really soon (mwahaha).
Meanwhile, Ross has recently launched a site for his Wombat Music Workshop, currently a place of crazy and unusual compositions which are gorgeous and tender, after you've gotten over the initial shock of the new. The first release from the Workshop is called "A Perfect Day", an album-in-progress which you can download free on Bandcamp! You can hear me singing on "Ladybug".
Ross is on Twitter, though you wouldn't know it most of the time. He's a studio guy, who burrows underground and does excellent work there. It's up to the people who surface with their shiny, golden records to be the proof of that.

Robin Hood tax
Richard Curtis has launched a campaign for the Tobin tax. It's pretty good.
Amongst the responses from leading economists is the opinion that this will probably not fly unless it is also broadly accepted by the large European countries (ie France and Germany) and the US. And the US, they say, will never accept it.

Just have to have more of that
Janis on Dick Cavett, some time later. Got to love a chatshow host that has a lighter on standby on the desk. And the refreshingness of the conversation! And nobody has to hold up the record because everybody who needs to know about the record knows about the record. Goddammit.

Jimi Hendrix on Dick Cavett
Well it really was 1969. I think this is the first interview I have ever seen with him.

Freddy's is fighting back and they're doing it on Fox News, baby
When I'm in Brooklyn, my local bar is Freddy's. Freddy's is a bar where you can walk in the door and meet friendly faces, have a pint and a chat, listen to a band play, watch Donald's all day long art video installations made of heavily edited film and tv archive footage, sit in peace and read, and talk to at least a dozen people you are likely to know there. Freddy's is the heart and soul of the neighbourhood of Prospect Heights. Freddy's is under threat from some louse called Ratner who wants to shit on everyone's parade and take everyone's home away and put up a large piece of concrete junk instead and the supreme court of the United States has put their judgements behind him. It's disgusting.
I posted a piece on Clusterflock today about it.

Paula Carino, Open on Sunday
A friend of mine in Brooklyn has made a new album, and she's using kickstarter to help her fund CD manufacturing costs. If you click on the widget below, it will take you to a page full of links to some of her music and where you can support her for as little as $8, which will get you a free download of the album as soon as it's out!
Only three days to go before the funding deadline, so get busy, folks.
